Although the NZ Women’s floorball team didn’t qualify for the World Floorball Championship (WFC) tournament in Slovakia, later this year, the team showed a lot of heart and took a lot from the WFC Qualification tournament. NZ finished sixth, out of eight teams, with six games in six days including two wins and some very close results. Congratulations to Japan on winning the overall tournament and also to Australia, Singapore and Thailand for qualifying alongside them for the WFC. We look forward to watching these teams represent our side of the world in December!
The tournament showed a definite improvement in the development of women's floorball in NZ and was great international floorball experience for all players involved. Many of the younger members of the team will now build on this and look ahead to the NZ Women’s U19 campaign, later this year.
The tournament was a huge success for Floorball NZ, and floorball in New Zealand, from a promotional point of view with 4,572 spectators across 22 games over six days. The sport hooked a number of first time spectators, made the local newspapers, there were radio interviews and even a clip on TV One News! (watch it here)
It was an exciting opportunity for Floorball NZ to host this tournament, and there are a lot of people to thank for making it happen - Wellington Storm Floorball Club, all the event volunteers, International Floorball Federation (IFF), ASB Sports Centre, Wellington City Council, Ricoh, NZ Racing Board, NZ Community Trust, Four Winds Foundation, Pelorus Trust, Century 21, CBRE, Meredith Connell, Brentwood Hotel, Pita Pit Newtown, Masanori Udagawa, Acumen Video Production, Pak n Save Kilbirnie, Whittaker's, Eastern Suburbs Sports Trust, Wellington Regional Aquatic Centre, New World Miramar, Hiremaster and Vitasport.
